Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads?

I got an oil change today and the shop said I have 1mm of brake pads left and I should probably replaces the Rotors as well b/c the rotors from the car factory (I have a fairly new car) are junk and should be replaced, Also I was wondering how much one would think is reasonable to pay for the replacement of these, I have an 06 Chrysler pt cruiser, thanks.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads? The rotors for your PT Cruiser (assuming it's a 2.4L non-turbo model) are 23 mm thick, and that includes the vents in between the braking surfaces. The minimum discard thickness is 21.4 mm. This is the thinnest that a shop can legally machine your rotors down to, and put them back on your car. That's a difference of 1.6 mm, or about 63 thousandths of an inch (1/16th). Given that rotors get thinner as they're used on the car, and then it usually takes a minimum machining of 10-15 thousandths of an inch per side to get them even again, it may very well end up being difficult to do so without going past the legal limit.

This is the case with many modern vehicles. Older cars used to have rotors with a difference between the new and discard thickness more along the lines of 120 thousandths of an inch. That's probably what the mechanic meant when they said they were %26quot;junk%26quot;. They're pretty much good for one set of pads, and then you need to throw them away. And the thickness of brake rotors are very easy to measure while on the car, without doing anything except taking the wheel off. They are measured with a special micrometer, which any mechanic worth his salt has in his tool box.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads? When they say, %26quot;The factory rotors are junk, buy ours,%26quot; they're just trying to make a sale. However, rotors do need to be replaced when they become too worn, which normally can't be determined without some special equipment to analyze the surface. Take it to a brake place, not an oil change place, for a better opinion.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads? The rotor should be replaced when they are worn beyond limits. A %26quot;probably should%26quot; is not sufficient for me. I just got a car inspected in Maryland a month ago and the guy told me the rotors are close to the end. They were within limits so he had to pass them and there's nothing wrong with running with rotors that are worn. Besides instead of telling me somethings junk without measuring it and telling me whats left is poor business and I decline to go back to that place.

Pt Cruiser-Go on to a program like rock.auto.com if you want an example what a rotor will cost. Rotors for this beast are pretty expensive.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads?the rotors dont have to be replaced as long as they are still with in spec. usually rotors can be turned to resurface them. there is however a minimum thickness spec that if turning the rotors would bring them in under the spec, then they need to be replaced.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads?Only if they are worn or you feel pulsing or vibrating when you push the brakes. Rotors from the factory are not junk. You do not need racing grade rotors for a PT Cruiser or for most of the newer cars on the street today.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads?No they don't have to be replaced unless they are scored real bad. You can have them turned at least once before you have to replace them.Do Rotors always need to be replaced with brake pads?depends on type of fitment. allow 150 all in
