Drum brakes are the hardest to detect when they are worn out. The drum has to be disassembled to check the wear of both the drum and the pads. But drum disks, which are usually located on the rear wheels, wear off in less time than the front disk brakes.

i wouldn't wait to long after they start making noise, especially if you do not have %26quot;screamers%26quot; on them(I think that is what they call them, they make noise when the brakes are starting to go...otherwise you would get to the grinding noise which is bad.)

I would personally get them looked at right away.How do I know whether I just need new brake pads or to replace other parts of the brakes?depends on how long theyve been changed n how the stopping habits haf been...if its pretty rough stoppin..id change em soon..pads arent that much anywayz.but when pads start scrapin metal(rotor),then youll haf to change pads,rotors ,n other little thingz if it gets damaged.foreign cars get more costly if pads start going metal to metal.american cars too..but nowhere near or aggrivating as foreign cars.....lol
