How hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?

I have a 2002 Honda Civic and I have been quoted $200 for parts and labor to replace the front brake pads. I am wondering if I can't do this myself for a lot cheaper. Any input/links to how-to sites would be appreciated. How hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?OK don't do it! these techs charge alot to do it because they've busted %26amp; bled knuckles trying to learn how to do it. now they've got the tools %26amp; the know how to make a very effective brake service work well. an amateur/novice will encounter problems out of their league then what happens. you're stuck in between a rock %26amp; a hard place. if a brake hose ruptures, if the rotors are rusted, if the piston doesn't collapse evenly slow or not at all or does not return well if at all, or if the fluid is black(moisture inhibitors are depleted),if the wheel cylinders leaks or a metal brake line breaks or if the hardware screws are worn/stripped when starting/removing or worse yet, finishing/replacing and you don't have extras to use, or if any other conditions arise during the process where you'll need fire or extreme heat to loosen metallic parts or even if the lug nuts are stripped or worse break off when removing or installing back......what do you do? if you're not in a shop, the answer may not be made in a safe manner. no brakes and you die, crash or kill someone. any wheel assembly issues during the process and you have a steering or wheel safety issue now from a brake service %26amp; it can happen on 04' %26amp; o5 cars and even these are fairly new but heat %26amp; friction know no age %26amp; that's why it's important to make sure you get a solid service. your life may depend on it. i have seen a wheel come off from a car 30 feet from me in the middle of the road because the fool didn't listen to me when i told him not to drive the car %26amp; tow it. he had 2 lug nuts on his right rear tire when he left. he made a u-turn, the wheel popped off %26amp; rolled about 15 feet from the car. the car skidded deep in the road resting on his brake rotor. he didn't want to take the time after i warned him he could die if the wheel came off.please be careful and remember i'm looking out for youHow hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?I've done this numerous times myself. It's fairly simple. It's just a matter of jacking up the car, removing the tire, removing two bolts that hold the caliper on, open a bleeder valve, force the caliper open wide, remove old pads, put in the new pads and then reverse the process to put the caliper and wheel back on.How hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?It very Easy and you will save money doing it. The disc brake are that easierHow hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads? It's very easy. It will cost you less than $50. Good luck1How hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?Yup, pretty simple...although I just use a C-clamp and the old brake pad to compress the caliper piston -keeps you from possibly having to bleed the brakes afterwards. Pick up a repair manual for about twenty bucks, It will tell you every step necessary to change them -some car have pads that can be changed without removing the caliper. But you will save money, even if you get really good premium pads. I used to sell parts to repair shops, and more often than not, they use the cheapest, crappiest pads possible in order to make money. How hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?Fairly easy job, but i wouldnt recomend opening any bleeder valves like you were recomended. Once air gets into the system, you will then need to bleed the brakes free of air. I would just take off the master cylinder cover and remove some fluid (best for most of it) out of the master. When you put the pads on then top off with fresh brake fluids.

You can go to www.autozone.com and look under the maintenence section for a brief description on how to replace your brakes.

PS........ If your pads hit the metal on the rotors, you will have to resurface them to true the new pads to them for better stopping power. If you have deep grooves in the rotor , then you may need to rteplace the rotors also.

Good Luck............you can e-mail me if you run into any problems. How hard/easy is it to replace your own brake pads?It all depends on the condition of your rotors, when you do break pads, its extremely smart to get your rotars machined, resurfaced or milled down whichever you call it. you can get that done by a machine shop or even a local shop for about 15 a rotor. The pads should cost anywhere between 40- 80 dollars depending on the quality and usage rating of the pads. Plus getting the tools needed to do it from sears will cost you 30 dollars, and thats being generous, but i do recommend getting a calliper expander, its going to be a life saver. the rest you can do with sockets wrenches and a pair of pliers. Getting a manual from your local parts store like haynes or chiltons is a good idea they break down how to take them apart and if you have to do your rear if they are drums they can be tricky.

  • How much should it cost to replace all 4 brake pads and rotors in my Rodeo?

My 2000 Izuzu Rodeo needs 4 new brake pads and rotors. The mechanic I took it to today quoted me around $600. Does that seem reasonable? How much should it cost to replace all 4 brake pads and rotors in my Rodeo? My shop generally charges between $350 to $500 for a 4 wheel brake job with ceramic pads and new economy rotors. If they are using good quality parts $600 is probably not a bad deal. I would request ceramic pads though. They have great stopping power, little or no dust on your wheels, less noise and they last very long. Sometimes ceramic are difficult to obtain for some vehicles, but if you look hard enough they usually can be found. I would say in general that the honesty and quality of work a shop does should be way more important than the price. A cheap job with poor quality parts and shoddy labor will almost always cost you more in the long run. Good luckHow much should it cost to replace all 4 brake pads and rotors in my Rodeo?I guess it depends on your location and what type of materials are used. I know that here in the bay area (S. F.) That's cheap. It's around $70 per rotor.Cheap pads( Organic) around $50 x2. Around $100x2 for ceramic plus 4 Hrs labor. Labor rates vary. Dealer rate was $110 hr. last time I looked. Independent from $65 to $80 hr.Includes fluid flush, parts wash and fluid. How much should it cost to replace all 4 brake pads and rotors in my Rodeo? That's reasonable, but replacing rotors that don't need replacing is one of the biggest scams on the market.

How much to get my brake pads replaced?

How much should I expect to pay to have the brake pads replaced on a 2000 Chevy S-10 (small pickup truck)? I live in Los Angeles in case location makes a difference. Thanks! How much to get my brake pads replaced?midas is $79.95 per axle and you have 2 axles and that's if you don't need any other new parts. How much to get my brake pads replaced?I'd think around $79-$99 per axle. meaning front brakes- rear brakes. That would be if they are only replacing the pads and can resurface the rotors.

How long until I need to change my brake pads?

For an average driver of a 2006 midsize car (Nissan Altima), how long until the brake pads should start to wear out?How long until I need to change my brake pads? This really depends on your driving habits if you drive with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake a lot quicker than if you you just drive with one foot for these two operations. the reason is even if you think you are not pressing the pedal if your foot is on it I garantee that the pedal has moved some wich will make the gap between your pads and rotors smaller causing more drag and wear on your pads. If you call normal driving new york city driving where you are constantly stopping and going probably around 30,000-35,000 miles. If you do alot of Highway driving and not much in town then usually from my experience (given that you take your time to slow down and do not start to stop at the last possible second on a regular basis) I would say anywhere from 40,000,-50,000 miles. If you are frequently traveling with a full load of people or luggage I would anticipate thes numbers to be less because the more weight you have in your vehicle the harder you have to press the pedal to get the vehicle to stop at the same rate as normal. This produces more heat and with more heat burns up the pad quicker. How long until I need to change my brake pads?If you have high performance brake pads they'll last 20k doing city driving, and 30k doing highway driving. These types of pads also generate a lot of brake dust but they stop very fast and very smooth.

Ceramics, almost last forever. Normal pads should last 30-50k depending on how you drive.

How long until I need to change my brake pads?25000 to 30000 miles but best to take off the wheels and look at how thick the pad lining is check it when you rotate your tires or ask the mechanic that does how your brakes look when he does you should rotate tires every 6000 miles also most brake pads have a small metal tab called a squealer its there to make a squeaking noise before the pads totaly wore out so dont ignore any squealing sonds coning from your wheelsHow long until I need to change my brake pads?check them every year. i check them in fall right before winter or spring right before summer depending on how much time i have. normally they should last about 2 years under normal driving conditions but, driving style %26amp; conditions play a role as well. if you are not mechenically inclined most car x's %26amp; nationally recognized shops will check your brakes for free. your brakes are very important thats why i have them checked every year. you never know when you have cracks in your brake line, accumulation of brake dust, leaking master cylinders or calipers, warped rotors, uneven wear etc... all that could lead to brake failure %26amp; is unpredictable when these items may happen. just because you have a never car does not make your car invincible to road hazzards.

this is great preventative mantaince that may prevent a potential situation.

  • How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?

I just had my new car inspected for my insurance company and it passed, but the mechanic said that I should probably think about changing the brake pads at some point. It's not a big deal now, but I'm wondering, how will I know when they do need to be changed? Obviously, I don't want to wait until I can't brake properly. If it matters, it's a '95 Pontiac Sunfire. Thanks. How would I know when I need to replace brake pads? Most cars now have a %26quot;clicker%26quot; or a %26quot;squealer%26quot; device that alerts you as to when the pads need replaced. If you hear a noise when braking, it's time to replace the brake pads.

How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?In some wheels, you can visibly see the brake pads if you look closely.

Have your mechanic show you (off the car) what a brake pad is. That's the easiest way to learn what you're inspecting.

Also use a flashlight to better see the pads. Brake pads should be visibly inspected every 12,000 miles.

Be aware the front pads go first, due to deceleration. The majority of a cars' weight is in front. When you stop, that inertia is transferred to your front wheels (nosedive effect.)

Once you're hearing squealing, it's TIME to get to the shop. How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?

How do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I'm looking to save money on getting my brake pads changed by doing them myself. I have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition. Any help would be greatly appreciated! How do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited and have not had any problem with changing the pads. Now to clear up some of the concerns that were mentioned....

The first thing you should do is buy a Haynes repair manual for your Jeep...I think they are like $15. Take it home and read the section on the brakes and it will explain what to look for, how to check and how to replace them. If you are comfortable doing all these things then I would say you won't have a problem. The Grand Cherokee has 4 wheel disc brakes and these are about the easiest things on the jeep to change.

This is in the manual but when you are changing the brake pads take the rotors into a auto shop and have them turn the rotors..the Grand Cherokee is notorious for warped rotors.

I will also give a word of caution...I would not recommend changing the parking brake shoes, these are not disc brakes and require special tools and are actually a PITA to get to. But that is just my opinion. Again it is in the repair manual and you can decide for yourself.

Also check out NAGCA.com and jeepsunlimited.com/forum for lots of info and help on anything related to your jeepHow do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?even thou one does not need a license to chage brakes you should not,...no offence but if you have to ask then you should not be changing them yourself, brakes are not to be trated as a simple oil change....but i dont know your level of expertise...im in automotive technology and we were not allowed to touch anyones breaks until we took a semesters courseHow do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?Just like any other car. you just have to determine if it disc or drum. after that search the rest online. it's easyHow do you change brake pads on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?Normally I would say get a manual, changing pads is a fairly easy job. But I'm not going to say that. Your Jeep is 12 years old. I would not be surprised if the calipers and rotors need to be replaced. I'm not saying that just because the car is 12 years old they need to be replaced. But it should be looked at by a professional. At least have a shop look at it, and give you an estimate. That will tell you what parts need to be changed. Then you can decide if you want to do the job yourself or not. Brakes are the most important system on your vehicle. If they are not repaired correctly it could put your life as well as anyone else on the road around you, in jeopardy.

I need to replace brake pads on a Ford KA. How do i remove calliper? how to i retract piston etc will i need much tools? How do I replace brake pads on a Ford KA?I say just buy them for cheap and get someone to fit them on, its not an expensive job.

I got mine from http://www.essexautoparts.co.uk/product/Brake_Pads_%28Front%29_1996_-_2003_1206062-FK11.3How do I replace brake pads on a Ford KA?Loosen wheel nuts on the front wheels, jack the car up via suitable jacking points, rest the car on axel stands and remove any jacks.

Remove the wheels and slide them under the car for now.

If its easier for you, turn the steering all the way to the side of which you choose to work first.

On the calliper there is 2 parts, the part you want to remove should have two 7mm allen key bolts securing it. You will need the specialist 'calliper key' for this, they're about 6.

Remove the top allen key bolt first, and slide out the pads, being careful of any small pieces.

Now, simply with a large flathead screwdriver, a crowbar, anything of similar relevance, push back the piston, it should be quite easy, but if not don't be frightened to give it some force.

Once you have reset the piston, place in the new pads and slot back the second part of the calliper, then replace the allen key bolt at the top and make sure its nice and secure.

Now you have done this, repeat the exact same for the opposite side.

Good luck :)How do I replace brake pads on a Ford KA?hi mate you will need an allen key size six or seven big pair of grips to push the piston back remove the brake fluid top before and replace after the work done dont 4 get to pump the pedal before driving it off anywhere and make sure the carrier is clean and the pads fit nice and free ok hope this helps if unsure get a garage to do it as should take no more than half hour

How long does it typically take for an auto shop mechanic to change out the brake pads on an SUV?How long does it usually take for brake pads to be replaced?a good decent mechanic will not only change the pads but before doing so will examine the condition of the rest of the brake area ........the brake caliper , the brake rotor , the hose , and whether the bolts are properly tight or not.

I'm going in on monday to get the brakes checked and fixed, everyone is saying it will prob just need new brake pads. Just wondering how long this will take?

Also any idea of how much it should cost? I've been told no more than $160. I'm a girl and taking it in myself so I don't wanna get ripped off.

Thanks! How much time will it take to check and possibly install new brake pads?It all depends:

If its just pads then 3/4 to1 hour time plus the cost of pads in the range of $150.

If the rooters need replacement then you can tack on at least another $150. It still takes about and 45 mins to do in any case.

Hope this helpsHow much time will it take to check and possibly install new brake pads?check clearance between brake rotor and the metal plate in brake pads, if it is 2/32 inches or less replace pads inmediately. remove the master cylinder cap, remove the calipers and then the old pads, with a c clamp put the caliper piston backward, install new pads and install the caliper on its place, you do not need to bleed the system because when you put backward the piston the air escapes in the cylinder not in the caliper(keep bleeder screw close), it is all done. 25-30 minutes always make first a slow speed road test of the brake before to go to streets. How much time will it take to check and possibly install new brake pads?my wife can replace hers in drive way about a hour a shop about same hour to replace pads takes about 30 minutes takes about 30 minute to turn rotors so a hour if they good not much more than two hours and yes 160 cheap to have someone do it you can learn how to check them your self just have to know how to jack up car and remove tire easy to look at brake pads and no if theres any left

I had my front pads and rotors replaced in May '07, as well as the rear pads.

I am starting to feel some vibration in the front when I brake to slow down or stop when going 50 mph and faster. You can really feel on the freeway offramp.

I has been 16,000 miles since this has been replaced. The majority of my miles is freeway driving.

To reduce weight %26amp; increase MPG; manufacturers have made narrower, lighter rotors.

This makes them less able to absorb heat and leads to warp. Unless you bought high priced performance rotors, it's unlikely the shop will do anything. But if you inquire nicely, they might cut them. Outside of performance rotors, try using softer pads, let the pads wear out as opposed to rotors. Smooth, gradual braking pays off as well. How many miles should new brake pads and rotors last?Considering your car is mostly driven on the freeway (little traffic %26amp; hwy speed??) the 16K mile seem very low. How do I change the front brake pads on a KF Ford Laser?

I want to know if there is anything to be careful of before my partner changes the brake pads on our car.How do I change the front brake pads on a KF Ford Laser?Well first off don't use just a jack also use jack stands ive seen many people

just jack up a car with a floor jack then get under it and get crushed and or killed

seen them both make sure your partner uses jack stands which are pretty cheap

compared to your life, as for the brakes themselves simple to replace first off

you will need to open master cylinder if the fluid is low don't fill it generally low fluid means worn brakes unbolt calipers which is the housing that holds the pads in the housing is a piston with a rubber gasket you will be to get a piston

compressor tool or large pair of channel locks and compress the piston all the way back in other wise your going to be hard pressed to get new pads in as you compress the piston the fluid level should rise back to full mark brakes are a sealed system if there was a leak brakes won't work well brake pedal will just slowly hit the floor boards when compressing pistons use rags

on the channel locks teeth so you don't poke a hole in the gaskets around the pistons put the new pads in re bolt caliper do the same on the other side

when your doing the brakes you want to look at the rotor make sure its smooth also you can look at the old pads them selves if one pad is more worn

the the other the calipers may need replacing make sure you buy a can of brake cleaner that way you can wipe any grease off the rotors grease and brakes don't mix nor will you stop, also if your rotors have lots of grooves

they will need to be replaced its not totally critical but brakes will last half the time than normally, also check fluid level once both brakes are replaced top off if needed its not totally critical to replace worn calipers or rotors but the new pad won't last long if you don't as far as brakes its always best to replace worn out calipers ie uneven wear or bad rotors with lots of grooves

you can take your rotors in to be turned meaning that a shop or machine shop puts on a lath and cuts the grooves out the problem with this is heating and cooling also any hair line cracks replace the rotors they will fail you looking for discoloration etc make sure you use cleaner specific to brakes

otherwise it will leave a chemical film and you may not stop and also wear eye protection

    hope this helps

I don't think you need to have the rotors resurfaced every time. It just depends on the wear and tear. How much does it cost to resurface front rotors and replace brake pads?I don't want anyone else to have to go through the frustration I went through.

The estimate of 100-150 was to replace your brakes and rotors by someone you know, not a auto place.

If they are too rough, they will wear out your brake pads and need resurfacing. Rotors have a tolerance and have to be so thick or they cannot be resurfaced and need to be replaced. Four year old rotors should be OK

You can also call up Pep Boys or Kragen or whatever parts store is in your area and ask them what new pads and rotors cost. Pads are pretty cheap and It might be cheaper to buy new rotors than resurfacing old ones.

Repair places sometimes will triple the cost of parts or more, ESPECIALLY for girl if they think you don't know what things cost in the first place. If you get some prices upfront, you can tell your mechanic that you DO know that he buys them for $7 and wondering why he's charging you $30.How much does it cost to resurface front rotors and replace brake pads?brake shop should not charge you to resurface your rotors if they are replacing your pads. overall price depending on the quality ot the pads should be about 79.00How much does it cost to resurface front rotors and replace brake pads?YOU SHOULD GET THE ROTORS TURNED FOR ABOUT $15.OO EACH, PADS RANGE FOR $15.00 A SET FOR CHEAPO'S TO $50.00 A SET FOR THE GOOD ONES.(YOU NEED 4 SETS)

When do you know you need to change your brake pads?

I have a 97 Honda Civic EX coupe.

Should I go by certain mileage as in every 50K miles or whatever? Or should I physically go look at the pads? If so, how thin is too thin? But I remember couple times the mechanic took the pads out it still look pretty thick to me (~.25%26quot; if I remembered right) it definitely had some to go until it hits the base material. So how do I tell when I should change my brake pads?

Also, if i do change anyone of them I should change all 4 right?

Thanks! When do you know you need to change your brake pads? You can't go by mileage because every driver is different and many people have more stop and go driving which wears the pads faster.

Best way is to look at pads during tire rotation. With the wheels off the pads can be easily checked for uneven wear to determine if they need replacing. That is how I caught an early problem and prevented damage to a rotor. One side had worn much faster than the other due to a slight flaw in the pad.

Some pads have a device that make a high pitched squeal when they are getting close to needing replacement. If you wait till you hear metal grinding on metal you have waited too long and will most likely need to replace the rotors as well. Big expense!!

If you don't rotate your own tires every 6000 miles ask the shop people who do it for you to check it at tire rotation. That will give you piece of mind and save you a lot of money.

Usually the front will wear out first so you need only change BOTH front ones at the same time.

Always change the pads on left and right of the same axle, front or rear. ON a car I drove for 180,000 miles I changed the front pads almost twice as many times as the rear....When do you know you need to change your brake pads? When you hear 'em squeakin' you should clean them and if they keep doin' it you should start thinking about knew brakes. When do you know you need to change your brake pads? No. 1, when your mechanic services your vehicle, they should check your brakes. No. 2, if they are worn out they usually start to squeak (they put metal in for this purpose)When do you know you need to change your brake pads?WHEN YOU START TO HEAR A NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A SCRAPEING SOUND WHEN YOU APPLY THE BREAKS AND IT IS EASY TO CHECK THE BREAKS REMOVE THE WHEELE AND LOOK UNDER THE ROTOR ARE PRIE THE BREAK PAD AWAY FROM THE ROTOR AND YOU CAN SEE IF THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED OR IF YOU DONT WANT TO MESS WITH IT TAKE IT TO A PEPBOYS SHOP AND THEY WILL CHECK IT FOR YOU FOR FREE THEY OFFER A FREE BREAK INSPECTION AND SO DO SOME OF THE OTHER SHOPS TOO OK HOPE THIS HELPS.......When do you know you need to change your brake pads?Just look at your whole car...

Look at the brake pads, or if you hear them squeek then check them out. WHen you get the time. The car WILL stop even if it's bare metal. Been there done that. Drove*%26gt;? an 86 volvo for a month on bare metal. So, lol. Check it as often as you check your suspension, and battery charge, belts etc. Usually when one is worng, several more comes up. Bad belt? Don't know it, sooner or later your battries not getting FULLY charged for a month or two, and you break down because of broken belt and bad battery. Same with brakes. Pad is ALL the sudden worn, sooner or later your rotor will warp, get that turned. Trust me you'll know.

To answer your question, if normal economy, usually every year need to check it.When do you know you need to change your brake pads?On disk brakes, there are rivets that will make a loud squeeling noise when you apply the brakes if the pads need to be replaced. All 4 wouldn't have to be replaced, but it would be a good idea, and the two on the front would have to be replaced at once. When do you know you need to change your brake pads? Most brake systems have wear indicators on the pads. When they wear down they start making a squeaky noise. There are some gas stations and brake repair shops that offer free brake inspections like Midas.

Finally, if you do change them, change them all at once and have the rotors checked for runout or warping. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?pads are a lot cheaper than rotors, what u been told is pretty safe, front brakes do a lot more work than back but have them all checked at one time because its cheaper to know earlier than too late also more expensiveWhen do you know you need to change your brake pads? When they ware down to only a few millimetres in material if you let them ware down to the metal you will damage the rotors and this is expensive to change. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?physically inspect them, milage is a guide, not a hard and fast rule. check them every 6-8 months visually. you need not remove any wheels, if you can see from under the car side. just turn your wheels to check the front. you may have to remove the back tires if you have drums.

change front pads whenever they get under 1/8 %26quot; of pad left. that'll be about 40-50k. the rear should also be changed when they have under 1/8%26quot;.

if you have front and rear pads, use the pads as above. but if you have drum brakes on the rear, they wear much slower and the shoes should be changed no later than 60k.

timewise, pads last about 12-18 months, shoes about twice that. so basically, you'll change pads twice and shoes once in about 24-36 months, depending on your braking habits. if you have an automatic, you'll change pads early. if you have a stick shift, you use the engine to slow more than the brakes and the brakes can last longer, but just remember not to ride the clutch or push the clutch in when braking. don't push in the clutch until you are nearly stopped. it saves the clutch and pressure plate, and reduces wearing them out.

also, when coming to a stop, use light braking, over a longer distance. short braking causes uneven wear on both shoes and pads, resulting in jerking as you come to a stop. to get rid of the jerking you have to have the drums and rotors turned to even them out again. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?alot of your pads today has a squeeler on them.when you hear it scraping the rotor then its time to replace them. When do you know you need to change your brake pads?De Bossy answered your immediate question. I just thought I'd mention the mechanic part of your description.

Almost every mechanic I have ever gone to for whatever reason (im usually a DIY and always DIY with brakes) has checked my brakes and said the brakes need to be replaced. I have a funny feeling I know why!

Once, I went to my mechanic I USED to trust to get my radiator flushed. He said I needed to get the brakes replaced in the front where I had disc in the front and drum in the rear.

    I laughed and asked if the place was %26quot;under new management.%26quot; He said, %26quot;yeah, can you tell?%26quot;

I went on to show him the brand new box I put my old brakes into. The receipt was still there so I could return the old ones to the auto parts place. It proved I had done it that previous weekend.

Here's the point. If you can, just check your own brakes. If they are even somewhat worn, like say only a fourth used, the shop will probably tell you to replace.

friction don't add to stuff....it turns stuff into heat and waste. How do i brake so as to preserve the long life of my brake pads?I've always believed, and practiced for several decades, braking early so as to ease the strain on the brake pads, but 2 blocks is a bit overboard on the idea. That's more like what we call %26quot;riding the brakes%26quot;, and true, that is not good for them, and also uses more fuel than necessary, and gets a lot of other drivers a bit %26quot;hot under the collar%26quot; if you know what I mean. I'm all for slower driving to conserve fuel in this day of extraordinary gas prices, but braking 2 blocks before you stop is just a bit extreme. God Bless you.

%26quot;dankish%26quot; has a very good idea and one I used for hundreds of thousands of miles, contrary to what my mechanic recommended, and, come to find out, my mechanic was wrong and I was right. My brake pads lasted over 100,000 miles and my clutch lasted 326,600 miles. God Bless you.How do i brake so as to preserve the long life of my brake pads?Actually you are close.

Start braking early but gently! very gently. This will maximize your brake life, as you are using brakes less and engine braking more. Punching the brakes early then applying power to get to the light is NOT good. Gentle pressure on the brakes and gently slowing so that you come to a complete stop at the light is best.

I tend to do the same. However, be aware of the cars behind you and wait before braking so as not to annoy those behind you.

One big advantage, you increase the chance that the light will change and you don't waste the energy coming to a complete stop and then accelerating away from it.

You will also help your mileage.

Skip downshifting as people sometimes recommend. Replacing a clutch or transmission is expensive, brakes are relatively cheap. If you have to choose between using your clutch/transmission or your brakes to slow down, pick the brakes every time, much cheaper.

Except when driving down a long downhill, of course. How do i brake so as to preserve the long life of my brake pads?Well, first you have to know what is happening when you are applying your breaks. Obviously you are trying to slow the vehicle. So the first thing is dont drive fast. This will not only save wear and tear on your brakes, but it will also save you gas. Second, allow plenty of room for stopping, dont follow too closely and give yourself plenty of time for intersections and turns. Finally, apply light even pressure to the pedal. Pushing down to hard will cause your brake pads to overheat and that will wear them out fast.

How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?

    of the rear brakes

also, in order to resurface the brake routers, is changing the brake pads necessary?

car is VWHow much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?First, check and see if this VW has four-wheel disc brakes. If it's like most vehicles, the rear brakes are drum, and there are no rotors (not 'router'), or brake pads, instead there are brake shoes.

I just had new rotors put on the front of my 1996 Ford Explorer. I have my work done at Midas, been going there for years and the shop manager takes good care of us and our vehicles. A new rotor is $90 and the cost of installing it plus the new pads (new pads are always free after the first Midas brake job) and adjusting the calipers was $55. Resurfacing a rotor might cost half as much as replacing it, but sometimes they are too corroded to have much material left after resurfacing and it's wasted money.

As it was explained to me, pad wear mirrors rotor wear. If you resurface or replace a rotor, new pads are generally a good idea.

Drum work is a little different, and cheaper, than disc. Check and see if you have rear drum brakes, and if you do, I bet you can get new shoes put on for less than $100.

If you've got disc all the way around and it's a VW (import parts are usually more than US), I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete job with new rotors and pads plus installation set you back $800.How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?changing the pads is extemly important. you will ruin the rotors if you dont replace them plus they are very cheap. also in my past experiences it is just as cheap to replace the rotors then turn them plus you dont have to worry about warpage and a warranty comes with the new one the turned ones get no warranty.at auto zone the prices range up and down but for a 1996 vw jetta with a 6 cyl the rotors that are the cheapes with a 2 year warranty are 18.99 and the pads are the cheapest ones with a limmited lifetime warranty and they are 24.99 so it is very cheap these are general prices for front pads and rotors. if you supplied info on your car like make modle and year i coulda gave more accurate prices.i did all four brakes on my jeep myself for around 150.00 and this is with all new parts and it is very easy if you need help grab a haynes repair manual at auto zone, there like 12.00 and explain it in great detail. How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?Yes you need new pads. If you don't replace these, then you just threw a bunch of money away.

Ball park, a good price would be about 80 US dollars an axle to get the brakes done. Provided the mechanic does not find something else wrong. This would be a %26quot;Promotional Price%26quot;, you know, a Midas special.

A reputable shop will be more, because they don't have to give promotional prices to get customers to bring cars in for service. Some shops are so good they don't try to sell you a part like a caliper that you do not need. Hope you can find one of these. The job estimate is always right or less.

While %26quot;Promotional Priced%26quot; repairs very seldom get out the door for less and most likely they will cost a lot more before it is over. How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?do no resurface you brake router. leave your brake router alone. and since it is a vw im going to recommend trading it in for something that isnt a complete pile of sh*t

How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?

I just got my car inspected and it passed. How do I know when to take it in for new brake pads before it effects the rotors so I dont have to pay for them ?

If I wait 1 year until next inspection, they could get damaged ?How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?It's pretty easy.

With most brake pads - you will hear them squeaking, because they put little pieces of ferrite in the last 1/4%26quot; or so of pad to let you know that it is time to replace them.

The other option is to loosen the lug nuts, jack the car up, pull the wheel off - and look at the pad. Less than 1/4%26quot; of pad and you should just go ahead and replace them - they are pretty easy to do, just make sure to get the little clips back on correctly. Most people suggest turning the rotors whenever you replace the pads - as long as they are smooth then this isn't really necessary - but it can extend the life of the new pads. How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?Most brake pads have a metal tab on them called a squealer it rubs on the rotor and makes a noise, when you hear this take it to a shop and get the pads replacedHow do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?There will be a loud pitched noise coming from the brake pads. They are designed this way to let you know they are getting low. When you hear that its time. Also check your rotors often (every 2 weeks or so) and make sure they are smooth and no grooves. How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?You have to take the wheels off and physically look at them. They should have 2/32nd or more friction surface...Or pad left to be safe. To get an idea of how much is 2/32nds. The distance from the top of Lincolns head to the edge of a penny is exactly 2/32nds. If it's real close to that amount I'd change them. There is a squeal clip that will start to rub on the rotor and make a squeaking noise when it gets at 2/32nds. But I wouldn't always rely on them. They don't always make alot of noise, and could also get bent away from the rotor and not do what they are intended to do.How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?i had never heard to check your rotors every 2 weeks but brakes go out around 25 to 30 thousand miles. if the squeak its just brake dust and not your rotors. you can also tell your brakes are bad if the pedal starts to vibrateHow do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?Most brakes have a wear indicator that makes a squealing sound when the brakes are used. There is a kind of metallic crunching sound when you start chewing up the rotors. Many shops will take a peek at the brakes free when you get your oil changed. How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?The little metal tab is called the wear indicator. It will sound terrible when it starts to touch the rotor to let you know that a brake job is needed. How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?If you can see the brake pad then look at it it should have about 1/4%26quot; of pad before the rotor contacts the steel part of the pad anything less and you don't have long before the rivets start to cut the rotor and damage it. If you can't see the pads take off a tire on the front and look at the pad the front pads will wear the same on both sides. New pads generally last 30,000 miles on the front and double that on the back...Good Luck

PS the penny thing is BS that is how you check tire tread not break pads if you get that close the rivets will already have damaged the rotors. How do you know when brake pads need replaced BEFORE you ruin the rotors ?The brakes start to squeel.

How often do you need to replace brake pads?

I purchased my car in October 2002, and it had only about 35,000 miles on it when I took it to the dealership for an oil change and was told that I needed to replace my brake pad. Since it had been about 3 years since I first purchased my car, it seemed reasonable. Then, when I got my oil changed recently, after about another 20,000 miles, I was told again that I needed to get new brake pads. I did it because I didn't want anything to happen to me or my car, but when I got to thinking about it, it seemed like I got scammed...What is reasonable and what is not? Driving style and pad type are both factors in break wear however the pads are a lot cheaper than the discs which can be damaged by driving with worn pads. Squeals do not always mean new pads are required as this can happen when a small stome or peice of grit is picked up and lodges betwen pad and disc. • How often to replace the brake pads on a crf250r?

How do adjust the brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes?

I have 2006 Hayes Nine XC disc brakes but I dont know how to adjust the brake pads to fit the caliper into the rotor. Help! How do adjust the brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes?Your Hayes brakes are self adjusting, if someone has pulled the lever whilst there was nothing between the pads then they will have closed together (pumped out), don't use a metal lever as this will damage the pads, hayes recommend in their manual that you wedge thin pieces of card or plastic between the pads to generate enough gap to pull the pads out (the pads will not close up again when you remove the card), then use a screwdriver to push the pistons back into their bores [being careful not to bend the pad mounting post].

Alternatively, if you simply mean that the pads don't align correctly so as to fit the rotor between them, then the caliper's bolt holes are oblong shape, simply loosen the bolts holding the caliper to the mount/adapter, the caliper should move freely side to side, then squeeze the lever (with the brake caliper in place over the rotor) and tighten the bolts whilst still squeezing the lever, this should align the caliper evenly but sometimes it don't! In which case you'll have to lign up the caliper by hand.

Also, brake fluid is VERY caustic and you need to wash your hands well after use and keep them away from your face. Flush the ground around your vehicle with a 5 gallon bucket of water when done, brake fluid dissolves in water, But is still a major contaminate. How do adjust the brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes?use a c clamp to push the caliper back so they will fit over rotorHow do adjust the brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes?you will need a big C-clamp ..put 1 of the old pads back on and open the C-clamp almost all the way clamp the old pad to the caliper. now before titan the clamp!! u will need to open the bleeder screw let the fluid run into a cup or something. now titan the clamp down till it wont go any more then titan the bleeder screw .. after reinstalling the brakes you may need to bleed the brakes..

How do you release the pressure in the brake lines for changing brake pads?

I'm changing the brake pads on my car, but I need to release the brake pressure to get them off. How do I do this? How do you release the pressure in the brake lines for changing brake pads?As soon as the car is turned off there is no pressure in the brake system. The easiest way to compress the caliper pistons back to their full seated position is with a carpenters sliding C-clamp. They're avalable at wood working, hardware stores and Sears.

Some rear calipers have indents or notches in two places around the faces of the piston. In that case you'll need a hardened inexpensive 3/8 square tool from an auto parts store. It fits a short socket extension and slides inside the notches. Slowely screw clockwide the piston back inside the rear calipers.

If your rear caliper pistons have no notches simply squeeze them back using the sliding bar C- clamp. How do you release the pressure in the brake lines for changing brake pads?remove cap on master take a screwdriver and pry between pad it Will go by not hard... you can take them off and push them back with a big c- clamp but ive always found a screwdriver works faster been doing it that way for a few 1000 cars never had any problems when i started back in the 70's not hard and much cheaper to do it your self here Will help give you a ideal...any ways i pry the caliber back some and then behind the back side on th epad and it will push the piston back so you can get it off sometime you can push it all the way if not use a big c-clamp or a big pair of slip pliersHow do you release the pressure in the brake lines for changing brake pads? You dont let air out, instead you push the fluid/compression back. You can use a C-Clamp (mini vice basically) and compress the cylinder away and put the brake pads in, then take the c clamp off.

Make sure you pump your brakes before driving away to make sure a tight pedal.

How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger?

I need new brakes and i heard it isn't that hard to change out brake pads. Plz add details i'm not a retard i just dont want to **** my **** up.How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger? You will need a jack, Jack stands, and Wheel blocks (In the event that the brake fails or your truck slips out of gear) the pads for the truck, Brake cleaner, a C-clamp (About a 6 in), wire or metal hangers, and Basic hand tools.

Break the lug nuts lose but do not remove them from the tires. Raise and support the truck with the jack and jack stands. Make sure the truck is resting on the jack stands and it does not rock back and forth. Remove the lung nuts from the wheels and remove the tires.

Once the tires are removed inspect the brake hoses and the calipers for cracks, wear, or other damage. The Calipers are held in place by 2 bolts. They may us a socket or a torx bit. (Normally a T-15 or t-20.) It varies on fords. I have seen both on their trucks. Loosen and remove the support bolts. With a small flat blade screw driver gently pry the caliper off the rotor (Make sure you do not scar, gouge, or damage the caliper or rotor in this process. The caliper should pull out of the support fairly easy. Next remove the outer pad from the caliper. With the old pad still in place use the C clamp to compress the piston on the caliper. You need to compress the piston in to the caliper other wise the new pads will not fit back around the rotor on the truck. For best results and to keep from damaging the control valve on the ABS Crack the bleeder valve on the caliper. Remove the inner pad after the piston is fully compressed.

Once the caliper has been compressed close the bleeder valve and use the wire or the hanger to help support the caliper, do not let the caliper hang from the brake hose. With the caliper supported and out of the way inspect your calipers for groves, glazing, burn marks, or uneven ware. Also take this time to inspect the pads that have been removed for uneven wear as well.

For the best possible brake job and to give you the best stopping power, pull the rotors and take then down to the auto parts store and have then turned. This takes care of a number of things that can cause poor performance from brakes. It removes the glaze from the surface, it true檚 the rotor (All rotors warp no matter how you drive) and it also gives a good clean surface for the brakes to mate too.

Once you get the rotors back from the auto parts store (Normally takes about an hour or two to complete the turning.) it's time to reassemble the system. a few things you need to do prior to reassembly is clean up the contact surfaces of the caliper and the mounting bracket also to use the brake cleaner to remove any grease, dirt, or metal filings that may have been left over from the machining process. Use some paper towels to wipe away the excess brake cleaner, install the rotors on to the car.

Next you need to install the calipers, these are free floating calipers and need to have a good clean lubricated surface to operate correctly. Using some sand paper or a wire brush remove any rust on any of the mating surfaces for the caliper and the mounting bracket. It doesn't need to be perfect but the cleaner you can get it the better. once the surface it cleaned up use a little bit or grease and apply it to both the mating surface of the caliper and the mounting bracket (We will some times use some small strips of Teflon to help them glide a little better but you do not need to do this. Install the new pads remove the caliper from the hanger and reinstall the caliper on to the car. You will need to lube the bolts as they help the caliper move freely as well. Install the bolts and tighten to hold the caliper in place.

Once the pads and the calipers have been installed and everything is sitting how it should, you will want to pump the breaks to help seat the pads against the rotors. (Starting the car will help as it uses the power break booster to help seat the brakes.) Check the pedal for feel. If they are a little spongy, this is likely because you opened the bleeder valve, you need to have some one pump the brakes while you bleed the system out. The best way to complete this is to start at the wheel that is farthest from the driver檚 seat, which would be the passenger rear wheel. Have your assistant pump the brakes and hold them, you crack the bleeder valve and look for air bubbles. If you see none lock the bleeder valve and move to the next wheel. Follow this process until you have done all the wheels working from the farthest wheel to the closest wheel to the driver.

Once you have completed the bleeding process put the wheels back on. Install the lug nuts and tighten then while still on the jack stands. Lower the car and then recheck the wheel lugs. Top off the brake fluid and then take the truck out for a test drive. Start out slow and do not get in to the brakes. They need time to seat and break in the new surface. You truck should stop just as well as it did when you purchased the car.

Hope this helps and please contact me if you have any more questions. How do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger?just go to servicing center and ask them to change the breaksHow do i change my brake pads on my 2000 ford ranger? On a 2000 Ranger, assuming you have the front of the truck jacked up with the wheels removed, you need a 13mm socket or wrench to remove the two brake caliper bolts. Once the caliper is removed, hang the caliper with a piece of coat hanger, or something else suitable. You will need a 1/2%26quot; drive 15mm socket and johnson bar to remove both of the caliper bracket bolts. Once removed, install the new anti-rattle clips and new brake pads onto the caliper bracket making sure the appropriate brake pads with the wear indicator tab on the INBOARD side of the bracket. Depending on whether your truck is 4x4, or 4x2, the brake rotors just %26quot;knock off%26quot; if it's 4x4. If it's 4x2, you will need to remove the center dust cap, and the cotter pin, as well as the floating bearing retaining nut in order to remove the rotor. The procedure is extensive for 4x2, so if you want further information, you can e-mail me, and I'll be happy to help you out. Hope this helps.

NEXT TIME ASKFOR THE OLD PARTS BACK.How do I know if my brake pads were changed 100% correct? If you had new discs as well you may have crap pads, otherwise the pads need time to bed in, after fitting new pads, I always road test a customers car and do several very hard stops from 70 to bed them in before letting the customer drive off, however if there is a problem, if you do not have ABS that is , the rears will lock when you brake hard, which is nasty.

There is nothing obvious that can be done wrong while fitting new pads to reduce efficiency, fail completely yes but not reduce efficiency except leaving brake pipe clamps on perhaps.

Try a few hard stops and if the problem persists take the car back and complain.

How do I know whether I just need new brake pads or to replace other parts of the brakes?

How long should you wait to replace brake pads or other parts of the brake system? How do I know whether I just need new brake pads or to replace other parts of the brakes? On most modern cars, there is a brake pad wear indicator that lights up on your dashboard.

However you can do a visual inspection looking at the brake pads within their calipers; either through your rims if the gaps between the spokes are big enough, or you will have to remove the wheel and check the pads. If your pad is less than 4 millimeters thick, it檚 time you think of getting new pads.

As for your brake disks, if you feel the surface of the brake disk, you will see that an outer edge is growing cause the disk is wearing out. If this edge grows to about a millimeter thick, then you檒l have to change the disk.

Drum brakes are the hardest to detect when they are worn out. The drum has to be disassembled to check the wear of both the drum and the pads. But drum disks, which are usually located on the rear wheels, wear off in less time than the front disk brakes.

Wear and tear of brakes is dependant upon several variables, such as car weight, car average speed when brakes are used, how often you use your brakes, types of pads and friction surfaces of disks and drums, and the age for the mentioned frication surfaces. How do I know whether I just need new brake pads or to replace other parts of the brakes?Your car will be making a squeaking sound...if the squeaking sound just started then most likely you only need new brake pads. How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre?

My brother-in-law is convinced he needs an allen wrench to change the front brake pads on his car. The allen wrench is supposedly needed to remove a bracket that is holding the calipers in place. He thinks the calepers need to be removed to change brake pads. I've never experienced this, but i guess it could be true. How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre? Most all General Motors cars, you would need to remove the calipers to change the pads. On many Japanese and European cars you don't have to. Most older GM calipers were held on by a pair of bolts with an %26quot;Allen%26quot; head, but most later models you will need a %26quot;Torx%26quot; bit.

The caliper bracket on these cars is an integral part of the steering knuckle, which cannot be removed, and removing the caliper will allow removal of the rotor. On some other cars the caliper bracket is removable, and would have to be removed to remove the rotor.

Is there anyway to figure out which pads ( rear or front) actually need replacing? How can you tell which brake pads need to be replaced?A squeaking noise does not always mean you must replace the pads . . . sometimes, it simply means they are glazed. A grinding or metallic noise always means replacement is needed.

To know . . . you must SEE the pads. Take the wheel off and look at the thickness of the pads. If you pull the calipers, go ahead and put on the new pads . . . since, you are THERE.

To answer your question, almost all of the time it is the FRONT pads that do most of the braking and that need replacng more often. I have run over 150,000 miles on my back ones while replacing the front ones every 35-40K miles. How can you tell which brake pads need to be replaced? There sure is. It's called removing the wheels and having a visual look. How can you tell which brake pads need to be replaced?take a look a the pads (some times they squeak with out need for replacementHow can you tell which brake pads need to be replaced?the only way is looking at them

  • How do you change Brake Pads on a 2002 Ford Ranger?

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger and I need to change the brake pads. Can someone direct me to a website or give me instructions on how to change the brake pads?

Is it extremely difficult? Should I just take it in? How much does it cost to take the car in to change the brake pads? How do you change Brake Pads on a 2002 Ford Ranger?Really quite simple

    1. measure the rotor diameter the parts shop may need that.

    2. Get pads and rotors don't worry about the super dooper pads that cost twice as much. get the cheaper ones with a life time warranty

3 YOU MUST replace the rotors I recommend that to all my customers. yes you can turn them but I find on trucks that they will warp easily and I only give an installation warranty I don't warrant against warped rotors on any truck/van

There are two TORX head bolt I am told are 40mm get a set of torx sockets.

4..with a large screwdriver or the caliper retract tool, I usually use a screwdriver, go between the pad and rotor of the inboard pad and pry the pad apart to the full extent it will go this is required before pulling the 2 bolts that take off the caliper, replace the rotor it pops right off and the pads watch those keepers as they prevent squeaking, If you get a tube of blue anti-squeal put it on the back of the pad not the face.

reassemble as you removed and do the other one. when you first start the truck press the brakes a couple of times to put pressure on the new pads and there you have it... We do this task in about an hour so plan on a first time 3 hours. It is quite simple..How do you change Brake Pads on a 2002 Ford Ranger?Repairing / replacing brakes is not a job for someone who hasn't done it before. Do us all a favor and take it to a pro. It is not a difficult job at all. There are just things you need to inspect when you have everthing apart and if your not sure you may screw up and at worse have %26quot;NO BRAKES%26quot;How do you change Brake Pads on a 2002 Ford Ranger?Get a haynes manual and a c clamp. easy job just 2 bolts holding each caliper on. You dont have to get new rotors hes on crack if they a have alot of grooves have them turned at a machine shop thats not even neccesary unless the rotors look bad. the pistons may have to be compressed back in the caliper for the new pads to fit thats why you need the c clamp.

Dont buy cheap pads they simply dont last as long yeah they have the same lifetime warranty they also create more dust that black crap on your wheels. Could be quiet noisey and are not gonna last as long.

One more important thing dont drive the truck when your done till you pump the brakes a couple times that will seat your pads pump the brakes till they feel firm

Just dont be stupid and take both sides apart at the same time. if you get confused just look at the other side as reference and gets some brake cleaner clean all the old junk before you take everything apart cause can be a little dirty.

pads should run around 35.00 for decent pads
